Who are we?

The Swarthmore CO-OP is the third oldest food cooperative in the country, with a long history of serving as a community anchor and beloved neighborhood grocery store for both its members as well as non-member shoppers -- "anyone can shop and anyone can join.” We place a strong emphasis on providing local and sustainably-grown/raised items and maintaining our important role as a full-service community grocery store. The CO-OP has approximately $6M in annual revenues and about 40 employees.

Grocery Team Member

What is your role?

A grocery team member is a major part of the Swarthmore Co-op, maintaining over one third of the store's retail space. This role requires an innovative mind, a great work ethic, and a high motor throughout the day. You will be asked to be on the sale floor for up to 8-9 hours a day stocking, merchandising, and providing excellent customer service to customers. Being customer service driven is a huge part of what you will do daily. You will also be doing receiving, stocking, and general merchandising of multiple departments on a daily basis.

What we need from you

  • Maintain a sense of energy in the store by taking initiative to do what’s needed.
  • Greet customers in a welcoming manner, helping them with any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Grocery, Dairy, Frozen stocking in a neat and timely manner while following rotation rules *FIFO*.
  • Help customers navigate through the store and assist in finding back stock items when needed
  • Become familiar with our Co-op products, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain backstock and walk-in storage units effectively and keep product rotated at all times.
  • Demonstrate reliability and professionalism in your work habits and appearance.
  • Help maintain a clean and well-kept environment throughout the store and outside dining areas.
  • Receiving of daily deliveries, making sure invoices and deliveries are reconciled and accurate.
  • Merchandise the departments as well as endcaps, feature areas, and seasonal displays including the patio
  • Communication with vendors through proper channels regarding ordering, delivery issues, or collecting information from potential vendor
  • Willingness to learn product ordering throughout the department

What You Offer in Skills and Qualifications

  • You have availability to work throughout the week and weekends, as well as nights.
  • You can maintain a positive, can-do attitude despite daily pressures.
  • You can multi-task effectively across multiple departments when alone for a period of time.
  • You easily demonstrate outgoing, professional communication skills.
  • You can read invoices, pack slips, and product lists and identify delivery issues in a timely manner.
  • You have the ability to lift boxes and containers up to 50 lbs on a continuous basis throughout the day.

Desired Background and Experience

  • Previous customer service and merchandising experience strongly desired.
  • Prior retail experience preferred but not required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Experience and interest in natural foods and cooperatives is a plus.

Customer Service Team Member

What is your role of a Customer Service Team member?

A customer service team member’s priority is precisely that—Customer Service!  This Co-op role is central to the Co-op mission, and you’ll ensure that each and every Co-op shopper is treated with respect, attention, and care. As a cashier and customer service team member, you’ll be handling customer purchases, providing information about membership and events and creating a friendly, local feel for valued shoppers.

What we need from you

  • Maintain a sense of energy in the store by taking initiative to do what’s needed.
  • Greet customers in a welcoming way, and perform check-out activities for purchases quickly and accurately.
  • Become knowledgeable about the store and be the best resource possible to field customer questions.
  • Demonstrate reliability and professionalism in your work habits and appearance.
  • Help maintain a clean and well-kept environment throughout the store and outside dining areas.
  • Demonstrate an ability to accurately handle cash and maintain accountability for it.
